Redesigning the future of news: develop and prototype the next-gen news experience | Data & AI Summit
Open to all study backgrounds. Multi-disciplinary teams combining perspectives from design, technology, media, business, and social sciences are highly encouraged.
1. Description of the Challenge
Design and prototype a next-generation news destination that keeps young audiences directly connected to trusted journalism over the next decade.
Mediahuis creates high-quality news across newspapers, podcasts, and digital apps, but faces growing competition for the attention of younger generations. As young audiences increasingly rely on social media, up-and-coming platforms, and AI tools like (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) for information, traditional media outlets risk losing their position as a direct destination for news over the next 10 to 15 years.
How can Mediahuis remain a primary, direct news destination for young users (20-35 y/o) in the future (next 10-15 years)? Rather than focusing on marketing strategies, Mediahuis challenges you to re-envision what their product of the future should look, feel, and function like. Translating that vision into an interactive prototype, whether as an app, interactive platform, or novel digital medium.
2. Expected Outcome
A concrete concept and interactive prototype of a future-proof news destination that you and your peers would actively choose to use, featuring innovative UX/UI choices, modern media formats, and features that make trusted news an engaging daily habit.
