Reinventing the Water Meter: Safe Self-Service for Brabant Water
students with a background in IT & AI, Engineering, Media & Communication, Sustainability, Built environment, Manufacturing
1. Description of the Challenge
The Problem
Water utilities are transitioning to smart water meters at scale, but a growing shortage of skilled technical personnel makes traditional installations difficult to sustain. At the same time, this process cannot afford any compromise on drinking water safety, measurement accuracy, or correct billing.
The Challenge
Rethink the water meter ecosystem from scratch to enable customers or local service providers to safely install or replace meters themselves. Explore how a modular setup; separating physical plumbing, measurement, and digital intelligence, supported by sensors, AI, or remote validation can prevent risks like leaks and backflow.
2. Expected Outcome
A compelling conceptual prototype that links the physical hardware concept to the full journey (request, installation, digital guidance, remote validation, and activation), clearly defining when self-service is safe and when a specialist technician is still required. The winning team will get the opportunity to pitch their concept directly to Brabant Water’s innovation and water meter experts.
