1. Description of the Challenge

Marktplaats helps people give items a second life. However, some listings receive little interest, while others attract views, favorites or conversations without progressing toward a sale. Sellers often do not know why or what to do next.

Selling an item is a problem as old as trade itself. Your challenge is to imagine how data and AI could help solve it in a new way.

Choose one moment where a seller needs help. The problem might be limited visibility, an ineffective listing or an unrealistic price. Also, different sellers have different needs, and trading habits can change whether our users are occasional sellers, high-volume sellers or younger users bringing different expectations. Design a creative intervention that helps the seller understand the situation and take the right next step.

A sample dataset will be available to support your thinking. You can choose a few relevant signals and show how AI could turn them into a useful seller recommendation or action. You may add fictional listing or buyer context where needed, clearly stating your assumptions.

AI tools also make it possible to quickly turn an idea into a visual prototype, showing how your solution could work within the Marktplaats seller experience. Extensive analysis, model training or working integrations are not required.

2. Expected Outcome

A concrete and innovative solution that helps a Marktplaats seller take the right next step. Within the challenge time, the final submission should include:

  • One worked example: a clearly defined seller, listing problem and recommended next action

  • One simple prototype: a visual mockup showing how the solution would work within the Marktplaats experience

  • One validation plan: how Marktplaats could test the solution and which outcome would indicate success

We value solutions that are useful, creative, feasible and easy for sellers to understand and trust.
