1. Description of the Challenge
How can we utilize the built environment as part of the ecological system in the natural environments that we are changing (pastures) through our future area developments. What is the right pan of approach to achieve this? Which nature inclusive solutions benefit the health of our future residents the most, and in which way does nature benefit of a building area with human presence?
2. Expected Outcome
A toolkit which presents a solution to the negative impacts cities have on biodiversity, the risks they face in terms of climate change, and how this can best be addressed. The solution is structured such that the interventions can be scaled according to the size of the project(s) being developed, the appetite for innovation and financial resources available. Specific urban planning and design measures that feed into the solution include using permeable surfaces for roads and sidewalks, using green roofs, maintaining and enhancing green infrastructure, preserving meadow habitat in some areas of de Laange Weeren, creating a pond and ensuring connectivity between habitat patches with the wider landscape.
